Annual Alumni Game Sets Stage for Fall Schedule
Sept. 10, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - In what has become the Illinois State softball team's annual kickoff to its fall season, the current Redbirds defeated a team made up of the program's alumni, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Marian Kneer Stadium. The contest served to reunite current and former Redbirds, while also preparing ISU for its eight-game fall exhibition schedule.
The alumni squad featured players from four different decades, including All-Americans Kara Nelson (IF, 2006-2011), Shannon Nicholson (P, 2003-07), Abby Olson (3B, 2007-2011), April Schermann (2B, 1996-99) Cutie Taylor (C, 2000-02) and Priscilla Welch-DeLaere (OF, 1993-97),. All four seniors from the 2013 Redbird squad - Jhavon Hamilton, Elizabeth Kay, Lauren Kellar and Shelby Music - also participated.
The current Redbirds jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nine-inning game. Nichelle Harrison reached on an error, before Laura Canopy doubled to put runners on second and third. Freshman Jordan de los Reyes singled to plate Harrison and Canopy for a 2-0 lead. Regan Romshek plated another run with a double in the seventh, giving the Redbird pitchers all the run support they would need.
Taylor Baxter, McKensie Vissering and Romshek combined to throw a five-hit shutout. Baxter tossed 3.0 no-hit innings to begin the game, striking out two and walking two. Vissering, an Illinois Central College transfer, followed with 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits, before Romshek pitched the final 3.0 innings of the game.
After weeks of individual workouts, the alumni game served as a transition to game action for the Redbirds, who will begin their eight-game fall exhibition slate this Sunday at Notre Dame. ISU will play its only home fall game Wednesday, Sept. 18 against Lake Land at 6:30 p.m.
Then, the Redbirds will play four games at the State Farm Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship, Sept. 21 and 22 at Champion Fields in Normal. The Redbirds will take on Valparaiso and Olivet Nazarene at 12 p.m., and 2:30 p.m., respectively on the 21st, before squaring off against Heartland and Ball State at 10 a.m., and 12:30 p.m., respectively on the 22nd.
ISU will conclude its fall schedule with a doubleheader at Wisconsin, Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at 1 p.m.
The Redbirds are coming off a 28-20 2013 campaign, including a third-place Missouri Valley Conference finish with a record of 13-7.
