Redbird Softball Announces 2013 Awards, 2014 Captains

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State head softball coach Melinda Fischer announced the squad's award winners from the 2013 season, as voted on by the players, Friday afternoon. Fischer and the team also deemed four Redbirds captains for next season.

Catcher Elizabeth Kay was recognized for a fantastic senior season with the Most Valuable Player and Best Offensive Player awards. The Bartlett, Ill., native was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, NFCA All-Mideast Region First Team and All-MVC First Team after leading the league with a .428 batting average, .538 on-base percentage and 44 RBI. Kay also led the squad in hits (62) and home runs (10), while becoming the program's all-time leader with 166 RBI.

Senior Lauren Kellar earned the Best Defensive Player award after a stellar senior campaign patrolling center field. The Colfax, Ill., native tallied just two errors all season, while leading the outfield with six assists. Another senior, Shelby Music, was named Most Improved. The Greenwood, Ind., native recorded 25 RBI, the third-most on the team, despite entering the season with just seven in her career. Music, who played in 39 games and started 34 as the designated player, also hit .228 with two home runs.



Freshman Regan Romshek was voted the squad's Newcomer of the Year. Romshek, a Gibson City, Ill., native, made an impact both in the circle and at the plate. She went 10-9 with a 3.69 ERA in 25 appearances and 19 starts, while also hitting .250 with a homer and six RBI.

The senior class - Jhavon Hamilton, Kay, Kellar and Music - was chosen by the coaching staff as recipients of the Redbird Award, which recognizes dedication, loyalty, perseverance and commitment to the program and university in all facets. The group became the first class in program history to make three NCAA Tournament appearances, going every year from 2010-12.

Additionally, the group voted on captains for the upcoming season. Rising seniors Taylor Baxter and Laura Canopy are captains for the second-straight season, while rising redshirt senior Nichelle Harrison and rising junior Stephanie Gallant were also selected.
