Creighton Defeats Wichita State, 3-1; Advances to Finals

May 11, 2007

NORMAL, Ill. - Home runs by Creighton shortstop Bailey Dawson and catcher TJ Eadus, along with seven innings of one-run softball by freshman pitcher Tara Oltman, was the recipe for success as the top-seeded Bluejays defeated No. 4 Wichita State, 3-1, in semifinal action of the 2007 Missouri Valley Conference Championship Friday in Normal, Ill.

Oltman pitched like a veteran in her first MVC tournament appearance allowing two hits and one run, on her way to recording her 24th victory of the season.

Creighton's record now stands at 38-12-1 overall on this season, while Wichita State ends its season with a 37-28 mark.

Creighton wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, as Eadus blasted her 15th home run of the season to straight away center field, a two-run shot, on the first pitch she saw from WSU's Margo Pruis. Eadus drove home third baseman Jamie Reiss, who led off the frame with a bloop single over Wichita State second baseman Brooke Usher.

The Bluejays improved their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning when Pruis gave up an opposite-field solo shot to right field to Dawson. Dawson hit her ninth homer of season on the tenth pitch of the sequence after fouling off five-straight offerings from Pruis.

Designated player Cynthia Verhulst cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning for Wichita State on a solo opposite-field homer over the right field wall off of Oltman. The home run was the team-leading 15th for Verhulst.

Creighton advances to face either second-seeded Illinois State or third-seeded Southern Illinois in Saturday's championship game. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.
