Scoggins Leads SIU to 1-0 Victory Over Bradley
May 10, 2007
NORMAL, Ill. - All-Conference pitcher Cassidy Scoggins was nearly perfect for Southern Illinois throwing seven innings of one-hit ball and catcher Jayme Wamlsey drove in her 40th RBI of the season in the bottom of the sixth leading the Salukis to the 1-0 victory over Bradley in quarterfinal action of the 2007 Missouri Valley Conference Championship on Thursday evening in Normal, Ill.
Scoggins was at her best out-dueling Bradley' Ashley Birdsong. Scoggins allowed just one hit to Bradley shortstop Lauren Meister in the top of the third inning. The Owasso, Okla., native struck out seven without giving up a walk and earned her 21st win of the season.
Birdsong had a strong outing in her own right recording nine punch outs, while allowing only one run on six hits.
Southern Illinois moves to 39-13 overall on the season, while Bradley ends its season with 26-23 mark.
The Salukis were able to push across their lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Wamsley doubled over the outstretched arm of Bradley left fielder Miriam Wegmann, which scored first baseman Lauren Haas. Haas led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on second baseman Alicia Garza's sacrifice.
Southern Illinois moves on to face second-seeded Illinois State in the first game of Friday's semifinal round. First pitch between the Salukis and the Redbirds is slated for 2:30 p.m.
