Warner Named Academic All-District Second Team
May 5, 2011
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior Megan Warner was named to the Capital One Academic All-District V Second Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday. Warner was one of seven Missouri Valley Conference players to earn first- or second-team accolades.
"Megan is an extremely hard worker, a very conscientious student and a very conscientious athlete," ISU head coach Melinda Fischer said. "She really takes her academics to heart and wants to excel both on and off the field. I think the area of exercise science is something that will suit her well when she enters into her profession."
Warner, who boasts a 3.76 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in exercise science, is 14-6 in the circle this season with a 2.78 ERA. The junior righty has notched 91 strikeouts in her 126.0 innings of work and has limited opposing hitters to a .230 batting average. The Milan, Ill., native was one of two pitchers named to the All-Valley Preseason Team and earned MVC Pitcher of the Week accolades earlier this season.
"Megan takes a lot of pride in her academic responsibilities and I think that goes hand-in-hand with her leadership responsibilities inside the circle," Fischer added. "She really exemplifies a total student-athlete at this level."
Warner and the Redbirds will be in action this weekend, when they wrap up the regular season in Omaha, Neb., with a three-game series with Creighton. Illinois State leads Drake by a half game in the Valley standings and will be looking to capture its first MVC regular-season championship since 2006.
