ST. LOUIS - Illinois State senior Jordan Birch was named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season, after going 3-0 with a 0.88 ERA in 24 innings last week against Indiana State and Bradley. Birch's honor marks the sixth MVC weekly award by a Redbird this season.
The Monroe, Wash., native started the week by taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Sycamores last Wednesday afternoon. Birch's no-hit bid was broken up by a leadoff single, but she completed the shutout, her eighth of the season, allowing just the one hit and only two base runners. She completed the week by scattering four hits in a 4-1 win over the Braves and tossed all 10 innings with 11 strikeouts in Illinois State's 5-4 win over BU Sunday in Peoria, Ill.
Birch owns a 17-12 record in the circle with a 1.70 ERA and 179 strikeouts in 173.0 innings so far this season. The senior righty leads the Valley in strikeouts, is tied for the league lead in wins and ranks second on the conference's ERA and opposing batting average (.206) lists.
Birch and the Redbirds will be back on the diamond Tuesday night, as they host Indiana State at Marian Kneer Stadium at 5 p.m. The contest will mark the series finale between Illinois State and the Sycamores, as the two teams split a doubleheader in Terre Haute, Ind., last Wednesday.
