Kay, Baxter Sweep Weekly MVC Softball Awards

April 8, 2013

ST. LOUIS - Following a 3-1 week, the Illinois State softball team produced both the Missouri Valley Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. Senior catcher Elizabeth Kay is the Player of the Week for the second-straight week and fourth time this season, while junior Taylor Baxter earned her first-career Pitcher of the Week honor.

In 15 plate appearances spanning four games, Kay was retired just twice, as she hit .800/.867/1.800 with two home runs, six RBI, four runs, two triples, five walks and three stolen bases. She went 3-for-4 with three RBI, a home run, a triple and two runs in ISU's mid-week 7-3 win over Northern Illinois. In game one of a three-game set against Missouri State, Kay was walked twice, before combining to go 5-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, two runs, a triple, three walks and three stolen bases in the final two games of the series.

Kay is hitting .769 over her last 10 games, raising her average to a Missouri Valley Conference-best .429. The senior has accumulated 155 RBI in her four-year career, leaving her three shy of becoming the conference's and program's all-time leader.

Baxter started three of ISU's four games last week, all Redbird victories, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.75 ERA. In game one against Missouri State, Baxter tossed her third shutout of the season, allowing just four hits in ISU's 1-0 win. Baxter increased her scoreless innings streak to 9.2 before the Bears scored a lone tally in the third inning of game three. That was all Baxter allowed, however, surrendering just two hits in her second-straight complete game win.

This is the first time ISU has swept the weekly awards since Niki Stansell and Megan Warner were named Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, May 10, 2010. Kay is the first Redbird to be named Player of the Week four times in one season since Nicole Kurth did it in 2001.

ISU will play a total of six games this week, beginning with a 4 p.m., contest at DePaul, Tuesday evening.
