Kay Earns Second MVC Player of the Week Accolade
March 11, 2013
ST. LOUIS - Illinois State softball senior catcher/infielder Elizabeth Kay is the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. The honor is the second for the Bartlett, Ill., native this season, and third of her career.
Kay led the Redbirds to a 2-2 weekend at Louisville's Red & Black Classic, going 7-for-11 with eight RBIs, six walks, two doubles and a run scored, while posting a .765 on-base percentage. After going 0-for-3 in ISU's first game of the weekend against No. 14 Michigan, Kay recorded multi-hit performances in the next three games. She went 4-for-5 against Austin Peay, tying a career-high with five RBIs. Then, on Sunday, she reached base in all nine of her plate appearances, going a combined 4-for-4 with five walks and three RBIs in ISU's win over Miami (Ohio) and loss to No. 13 Louisville. Her .363 average, five long balls and 24 RBIs lead ISU this season.
Kay continues to climb her way up the program's all-time record books in a number of categories. She ranks in the top 15 in all-time home runs (third with 38), RBIs (fourth with 146), total bases (sixth with 309), slugging percentage (10th with .528), runs scored (10th with 105) and hits (15th with 165). She has also started all 190 games of her career, ranking her 12th all-time and leaving her 33 shy of Kara Nelson's record 223, with 30 scheduled games left this season, not counting postseason.
ISU begins Missouri Valley Conference play this coming weekend against Bradley at Marian Kneer Stadium, with a double-header Saturday, March 16, and one game on Sunday, March 17. The three contests will be the first at home for the Redbirds, who went 13-12 in road or neutral site contests to open the season.
