Kay Named MVC Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS - Senior infielder/catcher Elizabeth Kay is the Missouri Valley Conference's Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. Kay went a combined 7-for-15 in the Redbirds' five games at the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz., with two home runs, six RBI, five runs scored and four walks.
Her best performance came in the finale against Illinois-Chicago, as she went 2-for-2 with two, two-run homers, four RBI, three runs scored and a career-high three walks. She also picked up one RBI in each victory over Minnesota, and stole her first base of the season against Michigan State. Defensively, Kay was perfect, starting four games at catcher and one at third, catching one runner stealing and committing no errors. She leads the team in average (.385), home runs (3), RBI (10), and slugging percentage (.710).
Kay was second on the 2012 Redbirds with seven home runs and 31 RBI. As a sophomore in 2011, Kay slugged 14 homers and collected 43 RBI on her way to NFCA All-Mideast Region First Team and All-MVC First Team accolades. She was an All-MVC First Team selection as a freshman as well, while also being named the conference's Newcomer of the Year after hitting .285 with 12 home runs and 48 RBI.
Kay's 36-career home runs rank her third on the program's all-time list, while her 132 RBI are fourth best. She has started all 175 games of her career.
The Redbirds are next in action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla., Feb. 22-24. ISU will play six teams during the weekend, five of which - Michigan, Hofstra, UMass, Louisiana-Lafayette and South Florida - made the NCAA Tournament in 2012
