Hamilton, Drish Power Redbirds to Series Win at Wichita State
April 21, 2013
WICHITA, Kan. - Two-run home runs from Jhavon Hamilton and Brittny Drish in the sixth and seventh inning, respectively, turned a 3-3 tie into a 7-3 victory for the Illinois State softball team over Wichita State, Sunday afternoon. The victory clinched the series win for the Redbirds over the Shockers, 2-1.
After losing a 3-0 lead for the second time in the series, Hamilton's blast in the sixth inning put the Redbirds (24-18, 9-6 Missouri Valley Conference) up once again, this time for good. Drish singled to begin the inning, before being replaced by pinch runner Kaitlyn Knary. Two batters later, with two outs and Knary on second, Hamilton lined the 2-1 pitch over the fence in left center for her fifth homer of the season. Drish added insurance in the seventh by crushing a 2-2 pitch off the scoreboard for her second home run of the season, making it a four-run advantage.
All nine Redbird batters reached base at least once, as the team recorded eight hits and walked eight times. Drish was the lone ISU player to tally multiple hits with two, while Drish, Hamilton and Shelby Music recorded two RBI apiece. Hamilton's walk and home run increased her season-long on-base streak to 21 games, while she also claimed the program's single-season walks record with 40.
Taylor Baxter and Regan Romshek combined to limit the Shockers (16-24, 7-9 MVC) to just four hits. Baxter (ND) started the contest, before being relieved by Romshek after giving up a solo home run to begin the fourth. Romshek (WP, 9-9) was stellar in relief, throwing 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out two.
The Redbirds opened the scoring in the third inning by putting up three runs against WSU starter Katie Armagost (LP, 5-15). ISU loaded the bases before Music came through with a two-out single up the middle to score Hamilton and Canopy, as Kay came home on an error by the WSU center fielder to make it 3-0 Redbirds.
The Shockers tied the game with two runs in the third and a solo home run in the fourth against Baxter, before Romshek held them scoreless the rest of the way.
The Redbirds continue their road swing with two games at league-leading Creighton, Monday, beginning at noon.
