TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Illinois State softball team (25-20, 10-7 MVC) split a doubleheader at Missouri Valley Conference opponent Indiana State (16-25, 3-13 MVC) Wednesday afternoon at Price Field in Terre Haute, Ind., taking game one, 3-0, before dropping the nightcap, 6-1. Senior pitcher Jordan Birch tossed a one-hitter in the opener for her 15th win and ninth shutout of the season.

Junior Lauren Kellar led the Redbird offense by going 3-for-7 at the plate and extending her on-base streak to 14 games. Freshmen Lindsey Greene and Kara Repp provided the only RBI for ISU, as Greene drove in a run in the opener and Repp provided the lone Illinois State run in the nightcap.

In the opener, Greene broke a scoreless tie in the fourth, with an RBI single to left that scored senior Caiti Kopp. Redshirt sophomore Nichelle Harrison scored on the same play, scampering home on an error by the Indiana State catcher to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Redbirds.

Illinois State extended its lead to 3-0 in its half of the seventh, taking advantage of a second Sycamore error. Junior Elizabeth Kay was hit by a pitch with two outs in the inning and scored two batters later after a ground ball off of Kopp's bat went through the legs of Indiana State third baseman.

Birch held the Sycamores to just two base runners, issuing a leadoff walk to Olivia Andrews in the second, before Megan Stone broke up her no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the seventh. Birch notched five strikeouts in the victory and improved her ERA to 1.75 on the year.

Indiana State struck first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a solo blast from Andres. The Redbirds responded in the fourth, as Repp drove in Harrison with her first-career double. Harrison reached on an infield single, before Repp's two-out hit to left.

After Illinois State stranded a pair of base runners in the fifth, the Sycamores responded with a five-run inning to open up a 6-1 advantage. Ashley Dickerson started the rally with a one-out double to right and Megan Bunting followed with a soft single to left. Alex Baumgart gave Indiana State the lead on a successful suicide squeeze, and Hailey Tinsman drove in one more with an infield single to the left side. The Sycamores capped the inning by adding two more runs on Shelby Wilson's RBI single and a Redbird error.

Indiana State starter Lindsey Beisser, who took the loss in game one, allowed just two base runners in the final two innings and held Illinois State to just four hits in the contest.

Senior Megan Warner took the loss in game two and fell to 9-7 on the season, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 4.2 innings. Freshman Sophia Perez came out of the bullpen and recorded the final four outs for Illinois State, striking out the side in the seventh.

Illinois State stranded 19 bases runners in the doubleheader, leaving 10 on in the opener, before stranding nine in the nightcap.

The Redbirds will return to the diamond this weekend, when they travel to Peoria, Ill., to take on in-state rival Bradley in a three-game Valley series beginning Saturday at noon.
