Illinois State Softball Drops Doubleheader to Drake

NORMAL, Ill. - After defeating its first 10 Missouri Valley Conference opponents, the Illinois State softball team was swept by Drake in Thursday's doubleheader at the Marian Kneer Softball Stadium. Drake (26-11, 7-4 MVC) took the first game, 8-6, and fought back in the second to defeat the Redbirds (22-13, 10-2 MVC), 5-1, in a game that lasted eight innings.
Game One Recap: Illinois State 6, Drake 8
Illinois State jumped ahead of Drake early in the game as ISU scored two runs on three hits in the first inning of play. Jhavon Hamilton reached first after laying down a perfect bunt and moved to second on a walk by Abby Olson. Hamilton scored on a single to deep center field by Elizabeth Kay. Niki Stansell singled to left field and drove Olson in for the second run of the inning.
Drake's bats came to life in the third when the Bulldogs scored three runs on two hits and two Redbird errors. Two Drake base runners scored on a double by Elena Leon, who advanced to third on a Redbird throwing error. Leon later scored on another Redbird throwing error.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the fourth on a two-run homer by Lindsey Vande Wall, while Bridget Shields hit a two-run shot in the fifth to give Drake a five-run lead.
Stansell hit a solo home run in the sixth, but Illinois State would not score anymore runs in the inning.
In the seventh, Drake added another run to the board as they increased their lead by five for the second time in the game. However, Illinois State was not going to give up easily. Hamilton doubled to deep left field and drove in two runs, while Michelle Henderson singled to left field and pushed Hamilton across for another Redbird run. Illinois State scored three runs on four hits, but were not able to score anymore runs and fell to its first conference opponent of the season.
Game Two Recap: Illinois State 1, Drake 5
The second game of the day was a pitcher's duel between Jordan Birch and Drake's Jenna DeLong. Birch struck out eight Drake batters, while DeLong sat down 10 Redbirds.
ISU got on the board first with a solo shot over the left field wall by Kay, which was the sixth of her career. Drake's Torey Craddock answered back in the top of the seventh with a homer over the center field wall to tie the game, 1-1.
The Redbirds were not able to score a game-winning run and forced the game into extra innings.
In the eighth, Drake's leadoff batter reached base on a walk and quickly moved around to third. The Bulldogs' Carrie Hatfield successfully laid down a suicide-squeeze bunt and scored Kelsey Kahler from third. Macie Silliman singled up the middle and drove in two more Bulldog runs, while the final Drake run scored on an ISU error.
Illinois State would not score in its half of the inning dropping its second-straight conference game.
Illinois State will travel to Carbondale, Ill., to face Southern Illinois in a three-game series Saturday-Sunday. The first game Saturday is slated to begin at noon.
