NORMAL, Ill. - Laura Canopy and Elizabeth Kay continued to provide pop from the middle of the lineup, while Regan Romshek was effective in relief, as the Illinois State softball team knocked off Northern Illinois, 7-3, Wednesday evening at Marian Kneer Stadium in the annual "Strike Out Cancer" game.

Canopy and Kay combined to go 6-for-7 with two home runs, four RBI and five runs scored to put the Redbirds (15-14, 1-2 MVC) back above .500. Canopy recorded her fifth multi-hit performance in the last six games, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a solo home run. Kay, the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, extended her hitting streak to seven games, with six of them being multi-hit performances, by going 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, a triple and two runs scored.

Romshek (WP, 5-7) relieved starter Taylor Baxter (ND) with a runner on first and nobody out in the top of the fourth inning. Making just her third appearance out of the bullpen, Romshek tossed 4.0 shutout innings to earn her first victory since March 10, allowing just two hits while striking out two.

The Huskies (11-19, 1-1 MAC) jumped ahead to a quick lead, scoring a run in the top of the first off of two hits. The Redbirds answered with two runs in their half of the inning, however, scoring in the first inning for the fourth straight game. Lauren Kellar and Canopy had back-to-back singles and both moved up 60 feet off of a passed ball to put runners in scoring position. Kay singled to third base, scoring Kellar to tie the game, 1-1. NIU's Emily Norton (LP, 4-12) then walked Shelby Music to load the bases and hit Sara Bradley, bringing home Canopy and giving ISU a 2-1 lead.

The Redbirds extended their advantage with three more runs in the second. With one out, Hamilton recorded a triple to the gap in right center field and crossed home plate as Kellar grounded out to third. Then, Canopy stepped into the batter's box and crushed a solo homer over the right field wall, giving ISU a 4-0 lead. Still with two outs, Kay hit the Redbirds' second triple of the inning and scored on a wild pitch, increasing ISU's lead to four, 5-1, through two complete innings.

In the top of the third, Northern Illinois scored two runs off of a two-run shot over the center field wall by Strum, cutting Illinois State's lead to two, 5-3. Kay moved the lead back to four in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a two-run homerun over the left field wall for her team-best seventh long ball of the season. .

ISU will close out its seven-game homestand this weekend against Missouri State with a three-game series. The two teams will face off in a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at noon, followed by a noon game Sunday.
