ORLANDO - The Illinois State softball team (11-10) picked up a 4-3 victory over No. 13 Louisiana-Lafayette to conclude the Disney Citrus Classic at 3-2, Sunday morning at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. ISU has now defeated three ranked opponents this season in eight attempts.
Elizabeth Kay and Laura Canopy recorded two hits apiece, with Kay hitting her fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning. Taylor Baxter (WP, 6-3) went the distance for the fifth time this season to earn the win, limiting one of the nation's best offenses to eight hits and three runs.
Trailing 2-0 entering the fourth inning, ISU grabbed the lead for good with three runs against UL starter Jordan Wallace (LP, 8-3). Canopy singled to lead off the inning, before Kay hit Wallace's first pitch over the fence in left to tie the game. Wallace got the next two Redbirds out, before Sara Bradley walked. Brittny Drish hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped by Leandra Maly, allowing Bradley to move to third. Hoffman came through with a line drive single up the middle, scoring Bradley to put ISU up, 3-2, before Drish was thrown out at home.
The Redbirds added what would become an important insurance run in the fifth. With two outs, Canopy, Kay and Shelby Music recorded three-straight singles, with Music's hit bringing home Canopy and making it 4-2 Redbirds.
Louisiana halved the lead with a lone tally in the sixth against Baxter. Matte Haack tripled over the head of Nichelle Harrison in right field, before scoring one batter later on a groundout. Then, with runners on first and second and two outs in the seventh, Haack hit another drive into right. However, Harrison made the play this time to record the game's final out.
The Ragin' Cajuns scored two runs in the second inning to begin the scoring, but it could've been worse for ISU. Louisiana loaded the bases with no outs, before Baxter got the next two batters to fly out. Natalie Fernandez came through with a two-out infield single to make it 1-0 UL, before Brianna Cherry's base hit made it 2-0. However, Baxter induced a fly out from Shellie Landry, the Ragin' Cajuns' leading run producer, to end the threat and keep the Redbirds within striking distance.
ISU will next travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Red & Black Classic. ISU will play a total of four games from Saturday, March 9 through Sunday, March 10.
