Redbirds Place League-High Five on MVC Scholar-Athlete Team
Nov. 19, 2013
ST. LOUIS - A league-best five Illinois State soccer players were recognized for their combination of success in the classroom and on the field by being named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, Tuesday afternoon. Senior Kyla Cross, senior Allie Newsom, redshirt junior Aryn Newsom, senior Anna Stinson and junior Rachel Tejada earned the recognition.
Cross earned first-team accolades for the second-straight season, in addition to her honorable mention choice in 2011. Also a two-time Capital One Academic All-District V selection, Cross boasts a 3.85 grade-point average (GPA) as an exercise science major. Athletically, Cross has been an All-MVC choice three times, including first-team honors this year. The Clinton Township, Mich., native has tallied 21 points on six goals and nine assists this season.
Allie's first-team selection was her second-consecutive as well. She has posted a 3.96 GPA as an exercise science major, earning perfect 4.0 GPAs in all but one semester. The Manteno, Ill., native has started all 21 games this season for the Redbirds, scoring two goals.
Allie's twin, Aryn, earned first-team recognition for the first time after being an honorable mention choice last year. Aryn maintains a 3.83 GPA as an exercise science major. She was named the 2013 MVC Goalkeeper of the Year after surrendering just two goals in Valley play, and also earned MVC All-Tournament Team accolades.
Stinson earned her third-consecutive first-team choice by maintaining her perfect 4.0 GPA as an exercise science major. The Kalamazoo, Mich., native is also a three-time Capital One Academic All-District V selection and MVC Elite 18 Award winner, which is given to the individual with the highest GPA at a Valley championship. Now in her third season as a captain, the midfielder has contributed to ISU's potent offense with two goals and six assists.
Earning her first recognition was Tejada. The forward from Troy, Ill., has posted a 3.33 GPA as a biological sciences major. She joined Stinson on the Capital One Academic All-District V First Team earlier this month. Tejada was named the MVC Player of the Year for the third-straight season, and leads the league with 42 points and an ISU single-season record 12 assists.
A total of 36 student-athletes were nominated for the Valley's scholar-athlete team. The criteria for the honor parallel the CoSIDA standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA. Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular-season matches or the MVC championship. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution. Sports information directors at MVC institutions voted for the team.
The Redbirds will play in the program's first-ever second-round NCAA Tournament match at Michigan, Friday.
