Tejada, Van Deventer Repeat as MVC Weekly Award Winners
Oct. 29, 2013
ST. LOUIS - Junior forward Rachel Tejada is the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second-straight week, while sophomore back Abby Van Deventer also repeats as the MVC Defensive Player of the Week. The awards are the fourth for Tejada and third for Van Deventer this season, and 10th and 11th given by the Valley to a Redbird.
Tejada recorded three points in the Redbirds' 3-0 win over Drake, Sunday, that clinched the MVC regular-season title outright. Tejada assisted on Anna Stinson's game-winning goal that came just 90 seconds into the match to put ISU ahead for good. Tejada then scored her league-leading 13th goal of the season in the 31st minute to give the Redbirds a 2-0 advantage. Her 34 points also lead the MVC, while her eight assists are tied with teammate Kyla Cross for tops in the conference.
Tejada has eclipsed the program's all-time marks for assists and points this season, with 27 and 131, respectively, and is second all-time with 52 goals. She is just two points shy of eclipsing former Evansville star Kayla Lambert's MVC record of 132. Tejada is also the active career leader in NCAA Division I for points per game (2.34) and is second goals per game (0.93).
Van Deventer anchored an Illinois State defense that posted its fourth-straight shutout, and fifth in the past six games, by playing all 90 minutes at center back. The sophomore was vital in stifling a Drake attack that consistently tried to attack up the middle and with balls over the top. She also tallied a season-high two shots, with one coming on goal. Van Deventer has played all 90 minutes in 12-straight games, a stretch during which ISU is 9-3 and has allowed just 0.83 goals per game.
The Redbirds conclude their regular season at Missouri State, Thursday. ISU has clinched the top seed in the MVC Tournament, meaning they will begin postseason play in the semifinals, Friday, Nov. 8, in Evansville, Ind.
