Two Redbirds Named Academic All-District
Oct. 29, 2009
NORMAL, Ill. - Redbird juniors Bethany Brown and Alyssa Schulz were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V Second Team, as announced Thursday by CoSIDA.
Brown holds a 4.00 grade-point-average in criminal justice and helped the Redbirds go undefeated at home this season. Brown's assist to Jessica Carlson won the game against Northern Illinois (Sept. 6). The Vernon Hills, Ill., native also helped the Redbird defense to six shutouts on the season.
Schulz holds a 3.89 GPA in elementary education and finished the regular season with six goals and led the team in assists with five. The Maple Grove, Minn., native was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week and scored a career-high two goals against Indiana State (Oct. 3).
"Bethany and Alyssa are two of our hardest workers on the field," said head coach Drew Roff. "So, it comes as no surprise that their hard work ethic carries over into the classroom. They are both driven and focused, and they set the standard for what we hope to see in our student-athletes."
The Redbirds finished the regular season 10-6-1 overall and 5-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play to earn their third-straight regular-season conference crown, earning the No. 1 seed and a bye in the first round of the 2009 State Farm MVC Tournament.
With the conference title, the Redbirds are set to begin tournament play Friday (Nov. 6) in Omaha, Neb. as the No. 1 seed.
