Cooley Earns MVC Defensive Player of the Week Accolades
Oct. 23, 2012
ST. LOUIS - Illinois State senior back Kristin Cooley is the Missouri Valley Conference's Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday. Cooley is the first Redbird to win weekly defensive honors this season, to go along with one goalkeeper and five offensive honors.
Cooley played an instrumental role in Illinois State recording its fifth shutout of the season in the Redbirds' 1-0 victory over Missouri State Sunday, Oct. 21. She spent much of the match marking Missouri State's Rachel Weimer, the Bears' leading scorer with six goals and two assists. Cooley limited the junior to just three shots, including none in the second half.
One impressive play came in the second half, as a ball was played over the top by the Bears that only Cooley or Weimer could get to. Cooley outran Weimer to the ball, breaking up the attack and keeping the Bears scoreless. Another key play came in the game's final seconds, as the Bears' Kelsey Fouch was cutting in from the right sideline towards the penalty area. Cooley cut her off, poking the ball free and sealing the Redbirds' win.
Cooley played all 90 minutes in the victory, giving the team captain 1,396 for the season, the most on this Redbird squad. Cooley has started 70-consecutive matches for the Redbirds, and has played 6,232 career-minutes. She is only nine minutes shy of eclipsing 2009 teammate Danielle Mutters for the most played in program history.
The Westfield, Ind., native will likely eclipse the mark in the Redbirds' next game, a trip to Drake Thursday, Oct. 25. The Redbirds can clinch a bye into the semifinals of the MVC Tournament with a win, while the Bulldogs take home the conference's regular-season title should they be victorious. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
