Oct. 16, 2009
NORMAL, Ill. - The 2008 Missouri Valley Conference Regular-Season Co-Champions, Evansville and Illinois State, will face each other for the first time this season as the Redbirds host the Purple Aces on homecoming weekend Sunday at 1 p.m. at Adelaide Street Field.
The Redbirds (8-5-1, 3-0-0 MVC) have won six-straight games and are coming off a 5-0 shutout over Northern Iowa to remain undefeated in the conference. During the game, Redbird senior Danielle Mutters surpassed the Illinois State all-time career record for minutes played, while freshman Rachel Bostick scored back-to-back goals in the second half.
Bostick now has four goals on the season, while the win marked ISU's fourth shutout of the season and first shutout in Valley play. The win also marked the fourth game this season the Redbirds have scored four or more goals in a single game.
MVC Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 12) Jessica Carlson leads the Redbirds in points this season with 18 after assisting Ammanda Wisniewski on her third goal of the season and ISU's fifth goal of the game against Northern Iowa (Oct. 14). Goalkeeper Sasha Reiber now has five wins on the season and three shutout victories.
Evansville is 5-8-0 overall and 2-2-0 in Valley play this season and is coming off a 2-1 loss to Indiana State.
"We are looking forward to Sunday's game here against Evansville on Homecoming weekend," said head coach Drew Roff. "We know it is going to be a very hard-fought match. I like the fact we are attacking with consistency and getting goals from several players. Our focus for the rest of the way in conference play is to really keep things tight in the back and not concede anything defensively. At this time of year, it really just comes down to execution and who wants it more."
Illinois State and Evansville are tied in the all-time series, 6-6-3. The last time these two teams met was on Sept. 27, 2008, when the Redbirds fell 4-1 to the Purple Aces.
