McArtor Named MVC Defensive Player of the Week
Oct. 1, 2013
ST. LOUIS - Junior defender Gabbi McArtor is the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday morning. It is the first weekly award from the conference of McArtor's career, and fifth for the Redbirds as a whole this season.
McArtor played all 90 minutes at left back, anchoring a Redbird defense that posted its second clean sheet this season in Friday's 4-0 win over IPFW. McArtor and the back line combined to limit the Mastodons to just five shots, including only one from leading scorer Gaby Romo. She has played in 1,067 of a possible 1,080 minutes this season, and has started 42-straight games dating back to her freshman season.
McArtor also chipped in offensively in the win, playing a perfect ball into the box from the left side that was converted by Rachel Tejada into the game-winning goal. After entering the season with just one assist in her career, McArtor has four through 12 games in 2013.
The Redbirds will begin MVC play Friday at Indiana State. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m., CT.
