Tejada Earns MVC Offensive Player of the Week Award
Sept. 10, 2013
ST. LOUIS - Illinois State junior Rachel Tejada is the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. Tejada scored her first two goals of the season during the Redbirds' two matches in Texas, and also recorded an assist to equal the program's career mark.
The two-time MVC Player of the Year snapped a career-long five-game goalless stretch dating back to last season by scoring the Redbirds' first goal in the 2-1 win over TCU, Friday. She also assisted on Hannah Leinert's game-winner, giving her 22 for her career to equal Jess Carlson's all-time mark. During Sunday's 2-1 loss at Texas, Tejada scored ISU's only goal of the match, giving the Redbirds a 1-0 lead in the second minute. She led all ISU players with five shots in the close loss.
Tejada's seven points is tied for first on the team and second in the MVC with Leinert, who won the same award Aug. 27. Tejada also leads the league with three assists.
In addition to reaching the all-time assists mark, Tejada is second all-time in program-history with 104 points and 41 goals. She is tied for sixth among all active players in Division I for career goals scored and seventh in career points, and is the only non-senior in the top-nine for both lists. She is the active career leader in points per game (2.31), goals per game (0.91) and assists per game (0.49).
The award is the 12th weekly MVC honor that Tejada has received in her career.
Tejada and the Redbirds begin a four-game home stretch this weekend. ISU will welcome SEMO, Friday at 4 p.m., before taking on No. 22 Marquette, Sunday at 1 p.m.
