NORMAL, Ill. -
Illinois State soccer junior Katie Grill-Donovan was named the Brine/Missouri Valley Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday. The goalkeeper helped ISU to a 1-1 record at the Lakeside Invitational over the holiday weekend to earn the first conference honor of her career.
Grill-Donovan was named to the all-tournament team at the Lakeside Invitational over the weekend. She made nine saves and posted a 1-1 record in two games. Grill-Donovan made three saves against Loyola to post her first shutout of the season; the seventh of her career. She had six saves in ISU's 1-0 loss to Northwestern Monday.
Illinois State head coach Drew Roff is very pleased with how Grill-Donovan has progressed over the early part of the season and feels that her performance over the weekend was worthy of the honor from the Valley.
"I thought Katie had a very solid weekend for us in goal," Roff said. "We only gave up one goal in two games against quality competition, so you have to give her and our back line a lot of credit. Her technique and her decision making have improved a great deal and she is playing with confidence which is great to see."
Grill-Donovan is the first Redbird to be named MVC Defensive Player of the Week since Shannon Durocher earned the honor in 2005. Her award is the 16th won by a Redbird goalkeeper all-time; the last going to Andrea Shaw in 2004. Becky Feldmann leads all ISU goalkeepers with eight defensive player of the week awards in her career. ISU won five offensive player of the week awards in 2007.
