Leinert Named MVC Offensive Player of the Week
Aug 27, 2013Weekly Valley Release
ST. LOUIS - Illinois State freshman Hannah Leinert is the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. Through the season's first two matches, Leinert is tied for the league-lead with teammate Kyla Cross in goals (two) and points (five), while also leading the conference with 10 shots.
She tallied one goal and an assist in the Redbirds' season-opening 3-2 victory against defending Mid-American Conference-champion Miami (Ohio), Aug. 23. The score gave ISU a one-goal lead as the first half wound down. She later assisted on the game-winning goal in the second half, playing a cross into the box that was finished by Cross to put the Redbirds on top for good.
In Sunday's 4-1 loss to Wisconsin, Leinert scored Illinois State's only goal of the match, burying a feed from Cross into the back of the net. The Wildwood, Mo., native also led all players in the match with five shots.
Leinert becomes the first ISU freshman to earn the award since junior Rachel Tejada won it seven times in 2011. Additionally, she is the first Redbird to score a goal in each of the first two matches of her career since Tejada scored in five-straight as a freshman.
Leinert and the Redbirds continue their tough non-conference schedule with a pair of road matches against Big Ten teams this weekend. ISU takes on Minnesota, Friday, before traveling to Illinois, Sunday. Both games will begin at 7 p.m.
