Final Exhibition Tuneup for Redbirds Sunday Against Iowa State
Aug. 17, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State soccer team will host Iowa State at Adelaide Street Field, Sunday at 1 p.m., for its final exhibition match. The Redbirds won their first preseason game, 5-4 at Eastern Michigan, while Iowa State is making its 2013 exhibition debut.
The Redbirds have not won in five all-time regular-season meetings with the Cyclones, losing four times and drawing once. The most recent meeting came in 2010, when Iowa State won at Adelaide Street Field, 2-0.
Senior Anna Stinson and freshman Hannah Leinert combined to score all five goals in ISU's win over the Eagles Wednesday, with Stinson posting a hat trick. With the victory, the Redbirds are unbeaten in their last seven exhibition matches.
Despite being picked to finish ninth in the Big 12 preseason poll, the Cyclones are riding momentum into 2013 after reaching the 10-win mark (10-10-0 overall, 1-7-0 Big 12) last year for the first time since 2005. With the 10 victories, Iowa State has improved its win total from the previous year for the past four seasons. The Cyclones return nine starters, including senior Jennifer Dominguez, who led the squad with 14 goals last season.
The Redbirds will officially open the 2013 season with two home matches next weekend. Illinois State will host defending Mid-American Conference champion Miami (Ohio), Friday, Aug. 23, before welcoming 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Wisconsin, Sunday, Aug. 25.
