Redbirds Open Preseason Slate at Eastern Michigan Wednesday
Aug. 13, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - After a week of two-a-day practices, the Illinois State soccer team will play its first of two exhibition games, Wednesday at Eastern Michigan's Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti, Mich. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. CT.
The Redbirds and Eagles will square off in the preseason for the second-straight year, as the two squads battled to a 1-1 draw at Adelaide Street Field last year on Aug. 12. EMU went on to go 11-6-2 overall and 8-3 in the Mid-American Conference, its highest conference win total since 2003. The Eagles lost only one senior from the 2012 team, and return 10 of 11 starters.
ISU also returns the majority of its 2012 team, including eight of 11 starters, that won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and made the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season. Two-time MVC Player of the Year Rachel Tejada and three-time All-MVC selection Anna Stinson return to power another potent Redbird offense. The match will mark the debuts of 10 freshmen for the Redbirds as well.
Illinois State and Eastern Michigan have officially met four times, the most recent matchup being a 3-0 road win for the Redbirds, Sept. 16, 2011.
Following the match against the Eagles, ISU will play its final exhibition match at home, Sunday, Aug. 18 against Iowa State at 1 p.m. The regular season officially begins Friday, Aug. 23, against defending MAC-champion Miami (Ohio).
