ISU Soccer Travels to IUPUI for Preseason Finale
Aug. 13, 2010
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's soccer team will close their preseason schedule with a match against IUPUI at 3 p.m. in Indianapolis on Saturday.
The Redbirds are coming off a 1-0 loss in their preseason opener against Valparaiso, which was played at Adelaide Street Field on Tuesday (Aug. 10).
"I think Saturday will be another good test for us," head coach Drew Roff said. "Valpo was a good team. They came in and gave us a tough game, putting pressure on us, especially in the midfield, and we struggled a bit with that pressure. We gave Valpo too much time and space defensively, and in the attack we didn't create many chances or create a lot of corner kick opportunities, which is uncharacteristic for us."
IUPUI finished the 2009 season with a 17-5-0 record and made its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, after claiming a share of the Summit League regular-season championship and winning the Summit League Tournament title. The Jaguars return 17 letterwinners and six starters from last year's squad that set single-season school records for goals (41), assists (35), shots (296), and road victories (9).
"IUPUI, coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance last year, is going to be a real challenge for us. That program continues to get better every year," said Roff. "I'm looking forward to another opportunity on Saturday to see if we can correct some of the things that I don't think we did very well. Our goal is to get better each time we play and I expect a much better performance on Saturday."
