Redbird Soccer Adds Dual-Sport Athlete Mussallem

July 3, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State soccer team is adding freshman Sarah Mussallem to the fold for its 2012 campaign, bringing the total number of Redbird newcomers to seven. Mussallem, a native of Palos Heights, Ill., will also compete on the Redbird track team.

Mussallem was a four-sport athlete at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School in Palos Hills, Ill., participating in gymnastics all four years and volleyball for two in addition to soccer and track. She will play forward, looking to add to the potent Redbird offensive attack.

"Athletically, she has a great deal of tools," Redbird head coach Drew Roff said. "As she develops this fall technically and tactically, we're excited to see how much she improves. She also has a great work ethic and we feel she's someone that can really improve at a dramatic rate. We're excited to see how she can fit in with our program."

As a senior, Mussallem led the Stagg soccer team to its second regional championship in her career, the other coming during her sophomore season. The team's captain and MVP, Mussallem collected all-conference, all-area and all-sectional honors. She also participated on the school's 400-meter relay team, the first relay team to qualify for state in school history.

Throughout her career, Mussallem also qualified for state in the 200-meter dash two times individually. She set school outdoor records in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter relay, 800-meter relay and indoor lows in the 200-meter dash, 55-meter dash, 800-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay.

As a gymnast, Mussallem qualified for state individually three times and was team captain and team MVP as a senior. The squad won conference championships her junior and sophomore campaigns and finished second in the state Mussallem's freshman season.

Mussallem joins six other freshmen who have signed their letters of intent: Kayla Campbell (Morton, Ill.), Ali Farkos (Flossmoor, Ill.), Lauren Koehl (St. Charles, Ill.), Rhianna Krutz (Des Plaines, Ill.), Abby Van Deventer (East Moline, Ill.) and Sarah Zuercher (Pekin, Ill.).

The Redbirds begin play on Aug. 8 with an exhibition contest at Murray State. The season officially opens Aug. 17, when the squad travels to Southeast Missouri State, with the home-opener coming Aug. 19 against Illinois at 1:00 p.m.
