NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State soccer team will move into its final weekend of spring competition this weekend as the Redbirds take on Big Ten opponent, Purdue, in West Lafayette, Ind., Friday, and then will return home to host Northern Illinois Sunday.

The Redbirds are coming off of a, 1-1, tie against conference opponent, Creighton, which was hosted at Bradley for the Danny Dahlquist Memorial game. The exhibition game against Creighton was the first 11-versus-11 game for ISU.

"It was nice to get out there and see how we performed in a game environment," head soccer coach Drew Roff said. "I thought it was a solid performance. We definitely found some things that we did well, and had some individuals that stepped up. But we found some things that we that we can do a little bit better like the organization of the back-four defenders, but we have been working hard all week and our goal is to learn from these things and finish our last weekend strong."

The Redbirds will continue 11-versus-11 play against the Boilermakers and Huskies this weekend.

"We know that both opponents that we will play have strong programs, and we always want to play good competition because then we're really getting tested," coach Roff said. "We are excited to get to focus on ourselves and evaluate our players as we work our way to the fall."

Three Redbirds have stepped up to perform during the spring schedule, including sophomore Katrina Jakobsze, who has added a spark to the Redbirds up top and also scored the goal against Creighton. Sophomore Afton Delvecchio has kept things together in the midfield, while junior Courtney Blake has continued to protect the Redbirds as she has made a lot of saves this spring.

Coach Roff looks forward to the `Birds playing with a lot of energy after training hard all spring.

"The spring is a lot of hard work with not a lot of games," Roff said. "Our goal is to get our legs back a little bit for the weekend, and be able to play this weekend's games with some energy and enthusiasm and finish strong. We want to perform well and learn as much as we can in these last couple of games."

The Redbirds will kick off against the Boilermakers at 6:30 p.m., Friday at the Purdue Soccer Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, TRC gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
