Redbird Soccer Releases Spring Schedule
March 18, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Coming off of its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title, the Illinois State soccer team will play six games this spring, as announced by head coach Drew Roff Monday morning.
"The goal of the spring season is to get better individually and collectively," Roff said. "I'm excited about the opportunities this schedule presents us with. We have six weeks to get better every day, and we have a lot of young players with a chance to step into bigger roles this spring, on and off the field. I'm excited to see what happens."
The first contest will be the Redbirds' only home match, as Western Illinois comes to Adelaide Street Field Saturday, March 23, for a 1 p.m., start. Sunday, April 7, features a 5 p.m., game against the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) at the Oak Brook Polo Grounds in Oak Brook, Ill. The Red Stars feature United States Women's National Team regular Shannon Boxx.
On Saturday, April 13, the Redbirds will travel to Evanston, Ill., to play Northwestern at 4:30 p.m. The Redbirds will take on the Fighting Illini of Illinois on Saturday, April 20, in a rematch of the 1-1 tie in front of a record 1,085 fans at Adelaide Street Field Aug. 19, 2012. The spring schedule concludes with two games on Saturday, April 27 in DeKalb, Ill., against Northern Illinois at 12 p.m., and UW Milwaukee at 2:45 p.m.
"It's going to be a great challenge for us to compete against this level of competition, considering the fact that we have about 12 healthy players at this point," Roff added. "We're going to have to prepare well."
Roff's Redbirds won 13 games for the second-straight season in 2012, before falling at No. 12 Marquette in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 3-0.
