Shawn Mecchi enters his first season as an assistant coach at Illinois State in 2007, but he is no stranger to head coach Drew Roff's style of play. Mecchi spent last season as Roff's assistant at Indianapolis, while also assisting with the Greyhound men's program. At Indianapolis, Mecchi conducted all goalkeeper training and game preparation for the men's and women's teams, while assisting the head coaches with recruiting, match preparation and analysis.
Prior to Indianapolis, Mecchi worked at his alma mater, The College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J., serving as an assistant coach on the women's soccer team during the 2005 season. Mecchi helped guide the Lions to a 22-1 record, the NJAC regular season and tournament titles, and the NCAA Division III national finals.
With a long history around the game of soccer, Mecchi has served as the head coach for the Dynamo FC `91 girls team in Indianapolis and the goalkeeping director for the Dynamo club since August 2006. Mecchi continues to work as a camp director and staff coach with the SoccerPlus Camps out of Farmington, Conn. he has been involved with the organization since 2002 and he instructs college-bound and top-level high school goalkeepers in technical and tactical aspects of the position.
Mecchi was a four-year starting goalkeeper at the College of New Jersey. As a freshman, he posted a 1.18 goals against average and a .867 save percentage, earning all-conference accolades. He played 47 games in his career, starting 42 of them and recording 21 wins. He notched 204 saves and had a 1.39 goals against average. The Pittsgrove, N.J., native earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from the College of New Jersey in 2006.
