MVC Soccer Awards Banquet

Three ISU soccer players earned individual awards, while nine were named All-Valley, at the annual MVC Awards Banquet.

Katie Baumgardner is in her second year as a graduate assistant at Illinois State. Baumgardner works primarily with the Redbird goalkeepers, a group that has helped lead ISU to two NCAA Tournament appearances, two Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament titles and one MVC regular-season crown in the past two years. Additionally, Aryn Newsom was named the MVC Goalkeeper of the Year in 2013.

Under Baumgardner's tutelage, Newsom posted one of the best single seasons for a goalkeeper in ISU history. The redshirt junior accumulated a 1.33 goals-against average against a challenging slate, while equaling a single-season program-record with 14 victories. Her best stretch of the year came in MVC play, where she allowed just two goals in six games and recorded four shutouts.

In Baumgardner's first season, the combination of Newsom and Mara Kremenovic posted a 1.26 goals-against average and five shutouts.

Baumgardner came to ISU after playing goalkeeper for four seasons at Ohio State. She started every match as a senior in 2011, compiling a record of 11-8-2. Additionally, she was named Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District and academic all-Big Ten.

As a junior in 2010, Baumgardner's play in net helped lead the Buckeyes to a berth in the Women's College Cup. She came off the bench in seven of the team's first 17 games, but then started the final seven, including all five NCAA matches. She was named to the College Cup All-Tournament team, making 10 saves in the semifinals against Notre Dame.

Baumgardner did not see any action on the pitch in 2009, but she was named an OSU Scholar-Athlete.

She played in five games as a freshman in 2008 and was again tabbed as an OSU Scholar-Athlete.

A native of Sterling, Va., Baumgardner attended Potomic Falls High School, lettering in soccer, lacrosse and basketball. She is the daughter of Marie and Charlie Baumgardner and the sister of Amy and Eric. Baumgardner is currently pursuing her master's degree in sports psychology.
