Redbird Gymnastics Blog #1 | Lisa Mulchek & Redbirds Host Successful Event

Editor's Note: Throughout the 2008-09 season, members of the Illinois State women's gymnastics team will be providing Redbird Athletics fans with an inside look into their team, as well as a glimpse into the daily life of an Illinois State student-athlete. The first blog in the series comes from gymnast Lisa Mulchek.

Hello Redbird Fans! This is Lisa Mulchek of the Illinois State gymnastics team. My teammates and I are excited to inform all of you about our brand new blog on GoRedbirds.com. Periodically throughout the season, we are going to give you, our fans, friends and family an inside view of what we are doing to prepare for each competition as well as what is going on in our daily lives. Here is what we've been up to during the past couple of weeks.

After a stressful week of finals (Dec. 8-13) we feel confident about our successes in the classroom. Now that winter break is here, are minds our focused on our competitive season which is quickly approaching. Our first meet is January 4, at home in Horton Field House against SEMO (Southeast Missouri State)!

It'd be nice to have a full month off at home like other students during the break, but I actually enjoy staying in Normal, Ill., with my teammates! We are fortunate to have a break from December 20-27, just enough time to enjoy the holidays and be with family and friends.

This week we are working hard on perfecting routines as we prepare for our second verification, Friday, Dec. 19, in the Horton Field House South Gym. We are looking great in practice and our confidence levels are high.

With a little extra time on our hands, we successfully held our first `Parents Night Out' in the South Gym Saturday night (Dec. 13). The kids had so much energy and loved playing with us. We set up obstacle courses and played on the trampoline, but the biggest hit was escaping from the sharks in the foam pit!

Our event was a perfect opportunity for parents to get some Holiday shopping done or just to have an evening to themselves. We think that it was a successful event because when it came time for the kids to leave, they were begging to stay! We plan to have another 'Parents Night Out' next year in April, so keep an eye out!

Check back Saturday to see verification results!
