Redbird Gymnastics Adds Four to Roster for 2013-14

Nov. 30, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State gymnastics head coach Bob Conkling added four new athletes during the early signing period for the 2013-14 season, as Kristyn Bossle (West Chicago, Ill.), Sydney Kennedy (Overland Park, Kan.), Demi Pas (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and Samantha Ward (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) signed National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at ISU.

"I am excited to announce the addition of four future Redbird gymnasts that will be starting here at ISU in the fall of 2013," Conkling said. "This is a strong and talented freshman class that should help our program move forward toward our future goals. All of them bring a wealth of experience, along with a high level of gymnastic skills and routines. These gymnasts have the `it' factor written all over them and should contribute greatly to the future success of the Redbird gymnastics program."

Bossle will join her sister, Jenna, on the Redbird roster next season and will look to make an immediate impact. A product of West Chicago Community High School, she competed at the club level for Phenom Gymnastics. Bossle was a 2012 regional qualifier and placed fourth at state in the all-around competition. In 2011, she also qualified for regionals and finished sixth on vault and beam.

"Kristyn is a powerful gymnast that will help us right away, especially on vault and uneven bars," Conkling said. "Kristyn has the same work ethic as her sister, Jenna, both in the classroom and in the gym. We know that she will be a valuable addition to our team."

Kennedy, a product of Blue Valley West High school, competed for the Eagles Gymnastics Club in Kansas. She placed second in the all-around competition and was first in the vault, uneven bars and the floor exercise at the 2012 state meet. Kennedy also took home top honors on bars and was fourth in the all-around at the regional competition that season before qualifying for nationals. She also qualified for the national competition in 2011, after she placed fourth in the all-around at the regional competition.

"Sydney is a strong all-around gymnast who will help us right away and could challenge for line-up spots on all four events," Conkling said. "Her experience as a two-time junior Olympic national qualifier, along with her strong competition results at state and regional competitions, is what we look for when recruiting potential gymnast for our program."

Pas heads to campus from north of the border, after competing for Stampede City Gymnastics Club and attending Crescent Heights High School in Calgary. At the 2012 Canadian Nationals, she placed second on the unveven pars and was ninth on the floor exercise on way to finishing sixth overall in the all-around competition.

"Demi is another strong all-around gymnast from Stampede City Gymnastics Club in Calgary, Alberta , Canada," Conkling stated. "Demi is a strong all-around gymnast, but it was her high skill level on both bars and beam and her elegant style that really attracted the ISU coaching staff to her."

Joining Pas from Canada will be Ward, who competed for Capital City Gymnastics and attended O'Brien Catholic High School in Edmonton. Ward also competed at the 2012 Canadian Nationals, where she finished 10 on the uneven bars and was 17th in the all-around completion.

"We are excited about Sam joining our team, because she has an incredible amount of high-level skills, especially on bars and floor," Conkling said. "The great thing about Sam is that she is still improving on all four events. Her clean style and high level of difficulty are definitely her strengths."
