Redbird Gymnastics Earns Academic Honors

INDIANAPOLIS - The Illinois State gymnastics team was recognized by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) as a team Scholastic All-America Award recipient for the 2011-12 season Tuesday. Six Redbirds were also honored individually.

Southern Utah led all NCAA women's gymnastics teams with a cumulative team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.843. Following the Thunderbirds in second was fellow Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) member Southeast Missouri State with a 3.736 team GPA. Wisconsin-Lacrosse came in third with a 3.711, while Utah and Brown rounded out the top five with team GPAs of 3.664 and 3.641, respectively.

The Redbirds were ranked the No. 22 team with a GPA of 3.413. Illinois-Chicago was No. 49 on the list with a team GPA of 3.215, as the third MIC school on the list.

Individually, student-athletes were recognized for attaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Across all three divisions, 471 student-athletes hit the 3.5 benchmark, while 60 of those earned perfect 4.0 GPAs.

Six Redbirds were recognized individually for their hard work in the classroom. Kimberly Caron, Sami King, Melissa Mann, Tori Sarantakis and Chelsie Seplowin were acknowledged for having 4.0 GPAs, while Jenna Bossle was recognized with a 3.8.
