May 29, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State senior gymnast Tori Sarantakiswas awarded with the 2012-13 Nancy and Robert Northrip Endowed Scholarship, which is presented annually to a gymnastics student-athlete with at least a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA).

The scholarship is named after Nancy and Robert Northrip, who are the owners of Ultimate Gymnastics in Chicago. Both have held a lifelong interest in gymnastics and participated in athletics while attending Illinois State. Nancy lettered in gymnastics for the Redbirds and Rob was a Redbird cheerleader.

Head coach Bob Conklingbelieves Sarantakis is worthy of the scholarship, after a successful 2011-12 season in both academics and gymnastics.

"I'm pleased that Tori is this year's recipient of the Northrip Endowed Scholarship," said Conkling. "Tori just came off a very successful season, being one of the most consistent competitors on the team. Tori has always represented the team well in school, the gym and in competition, making her the perfect choice for the Northrip Scholarship. I would like to thank Rob and Nancy Northrip again for their continued support of Redbird Athletics and congratulate Tori for receiving this honor."

Sarantakis has been a consistent competitor on the vault, uneven bars and balance beam at Illinois State. The Inverness, Ill., native competed in every meet for the Redbirds during the 2011-12 season. Sarantakis posted a career-high 9.850 on the vault against Northern Illinois (March 4), a career-high 9.750 on the uneven bars at the Midwest Independent Conference Championships (March 24) and a career-high 9.725 on the balance beam against Michigan State (Jan. 28).

Sarantakis also received a season-high score of 9.175 on the floor exercise against Ball State (Jan. 13). She competed in the all-around twice during her junior season and had a career-high 37.900 in the all-around competition against Ball State (Jan. 8). Sarantakis also contributed to the record-breaking team vault score of 49.150 against Southeast Missouri State (Feb. 24). The senior gymnast maintains a 3.73 GPA in elementary education.

"I am so grateful and honored, to not only be considered for this award, but to be chosen to represent Illinois State Gymnastics as the Northrip scholarship recipient," Sarantakis said.
