March 20, 2009
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State gymnastics team season is coming to a close this weekend, as the Redbirds host the Midwest Independent Conference Championship meet. The five-team meet consists of Illinois State, Illinois-Chicago, Southeast Missouri State, Texas Women's University, and Centenary. The competition will be held at Redbird Arena on Saturday, March 21, with the first routines set to begin at 4 p.m.
Head coach Bob Conkling is looking forward to hosting as well as competing at the conference meet.
"It is always good to compete at home in front of our fans," said Conkling. "Our conference is so strong right now that it will be a very tight competition. SEMO is leading the conference, while Illinois-Chicago is in second place. Illinois State is in third, followed by Texas Women's University and Centenary."
Senior Meaghan Koshman is currently ranked second in the conference on the vault with her average score of 9.784. Sophomore Erica Schick is ranked fourth on the uneven bars for her average score of 9.633. On the balance beam, two Illinois State gymnasts take up the top-three spots. Sophomore Hannah Deutsch and freshman Melissa Mann are averaging a 9.712 and a 9.693, respectively. Koshman is also ranked sixth on the floor routine with a 9.672.
As a team, the `Birds are currently in third place on the vault, uneven bars, and floor routine. They are second on the balance beam in the conference. Conkling is proud of how the student-athletes performed this season.
"The season has gone by fast," said Conkling. "I can't believe that we are already entering our last regular season meet. I think the team had a very successful year, with our team scores being higher than they have been since I started coaching at Illinois State. I'm pleased to have seven wins under our belt so far this season. I hope after this weekend's conference we will have a few more wins to count towards our record."
