Redbirds Travel to Louisiana to Take on Centenary
March 9, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State gymnastics team will go head-to-head with Midwest Independent Conference rival Centenary for the first time this season, Saturday, March 10, at 5 p.m., when the Redbirds travel to Shreveport, La., for a dual meet.
Head coach Bob Conkling is expecting to compete strongly in the upcoming meet against Centenary.
"As we have seen throughout the season, our opponents seem to have their best meets against us, so we have learned not to take any competition lightly," said Conkling. "I do believe that the team is focused on hitting their routines. If we keep that as our main goal, we should give Centenary a good competition."
The Redbirds fell last week to Northern Illinois by a final score of 194.350-195.100. Despite the loss, many ISU gymnasts performed at a high level. Junior Kim Genereux placed first in the all-around competition, and placed first in the floor exercise with a career best score of 9.825. Those performances earned her MIC Gymnast of the Week honors for the first time in her career.
Junior Tori Sarantakis and sophomore Elise Gray tied for first place on the vault, with career-best scores of 9.850. Freshman Samantha King and junior Apollonia Barrientos also tied for first on uneven bars, with career-high scores of 9.800. Freshman Megan Yee also placed third on the balance beam for the first time in her collegiate career, with a personal-best score of 9.750.
Conkling hopes for continuous improvement and growth in the upcoming meets.
"Although each meet we have had some very strong performances from a lot of different gymnasts, we have not had all six gymnast on each event perform to their capability," said Conkling. "Saying that, I believe the team is capable of continuous growth and improvement throughout the remainder of the season.Consistency, confidence and competing to their maximum capabilities is what I want to see from the team."
