NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State gymnastics team will travel to Denver to take on No. 13 University of Denver and Arizona State Saturday, March 9 at 6 p.m. MT in Hamilton Gymnasium.
"We are very excited to compete against these two quality teams," said head coach Bob Conkling. "Denver and Arizona State are both strong programs and we are thrilled to compete against these nationally ranked teams."
Last week the Redbirds competed against No. 18 Ohio State. Sophomore Sami King led the gymnastics team by placing third in the all-around competition with a 38.850. She placed first on the uneven bars with a score of 9.825 and also placed first on the floor exercise with a 9.875 against Ohio State.
Following Sami King was teammate Kim Genereux. She placed fourth in the all-around competition with a 38.725. Senior Tori Sarantakis also helped the Redbirds by posting strong scores and placing fifth in the all-around.
The Ritchie Center Box Office in Denver, Colo. announced that Saturday's meet is completely sold out.
U.S. Olympian Jordyn Wieber will be making an appearance at the tri-meet. Wieber won the gold medal with Team USA at the 2012 Olympic Games in London last summer. The DeWitt, Mich., native was also the 2012 U.S. all-around champion and a floor exercise silver medalist.
"Our goal is to be focused on what we can control which is our performance level of our routines and remaining positive and aggressive throughout the competition. I could not be more proud of this team and how they have stepped up and stepped in to replace the injured gymnasts throughout the season. I'm most proud of how they remained positive and supported each other, the staff and coaches," said Conkling.
