Redbirds Fall to Lindenwood and Missouri
NORMAL, Ill. - Sarah Fisher took third place in the all-around competition with a score of 37.075, but Illinois State fell to Lindenwood and Missouri on Friday night in St. Charles, Mo.
The Redbirds took third place with a score of 190.175, just behind host Lindenwood who took second with a score of 190.925. The Missouri Tigers won the tri-meet with a score of 194.050.
Fisher, who competed in the all-around for only the second time this season, struggled on the vault and uneven bars, but was able to recover to finish the meet strong on the balance beam and floor exercises by posting scores of 9.525 and 9.600, respectively.
Head coach Bob Conkling was pleased with Fisher's performance and her drive to improve every week.
"Sarah went to a more difficult vault routine and just about made it, but not quite," Conkling said. "Kristen Lieberman also stuck her vault again this meet which was great to see."
Junior Sami King, who took a week off of competition last week to heal an injury, focused on the balance beam this week and was able to record a season-best score of 9.825 to take second place in the event. Senior Jenna Bossle posted a season-high of her own on the beam with a score of 9.500.
"This was the first time this season we didn't count a fall on the beam," Conkling said. "We made improvements and this was our best beam rotation as a team this year."
Senior Kim Caron led the way for the Redbirds on the floor exercise by scoring a 9.625. Conkling believed even though her score did not quite show it, it was her best floor routine this year.
"Overall, it was a pretty steady meet," Conkling said. "We made improvements this week but we have to put together an entire meet and clean up some routines, which I think they are capable of doing."
The Redbirds return to action when they head home to host the annual state of Illinois Classic on Feb. 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Horton Field House.
