  • The Illinois State gymnastics team, led by junior Kim Genereux, dominated Friday night, tying its season-high team score of 193.625.

Following the Redbirds in second place was Seattle Pacific with a team-score of 191.600, Temple in third place with a team-score of 190.250, and Wisconsin-Stout in fourth with a team-score of 178.625.

Head Coach Bob Conkling is ecstatic with how the team performed.

"I am very pleased with the team as a whole," said Conkling. "Tonight a couple gymnasts had off nights and still made it into a routine with respectable scores, that's when we know our team is really strong overall."

Genereux placed first in the all-around competition, with a score of 38.825. Genereux placed second on both uneven bars (9.750) and vault (9.775), and third on floor exercise (9.725).

"I was thrilled with Kim's performance in the all-around," said Conkling. "It was a shame she had that minor mishap on her last tumbling pass or she would have sky-rocketed for her first all-around meet this season. She looks great right now, and she is on limited training with having such a demanding major in the nursing program. She looks fantastic."

The Redbirds began the meet strong on vault, with a team-score of 48.425. Junior Elise Gray tied for second place, with a score of 9.775. The uneven bars were also a strong event for the team, with a team-score of 48.525. Freshman Samantha King earned a first place finish with a score of 9.775.

The Redbirds scored a season high team score of 48.700. Senior Robin Weissman and junior Marissa Stom tied for second with a score of 9.800. Senior Melissa Mann earned first place on balance beam with a score of 9.775, although it was not the Redbirds' strongest event, earning a team-score of 47.975.

"We really did well on floor exercise tonight as a whole," said Conkling. "Robin and Marissa's performances were both fantastic. It was really our first time this season getting close to reaching our full potential on floor exercise."

The Redbirds will host Western Michigan Friday Feb. 17, in historic Horton Field House. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
