NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State gymnastics team will travel to Illinois-Chicago to take on Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and UIC, Saturday, Feb. 2 at 5 p.m.
This will be the third annual Illinois vs. Michigan meet between the four schools, who will rotate hosting the meet each year. The two Illinois teams will combine their scores against the two Michigan teams to see which state is victorious. Last year the state of Illinois posted a victory over the state of Michigan, 387.00-383.975. UIC led the meet with a score of 194.125, followed by Illinois State with a score of 192.875.
"Michigan won the first year and Illinois won last year," said head coach Bob Conkling. "Both Illinois teams are strong this year, but so are the Michigan teams, so I think it will come down to which two state teams hit their routines. We have been focusing on consistency of our routines this week in practice with increase in pressure type routines, especially on beam. The team has done very well with this and has been very confident this week in workouts".
The Redbirds set a season-high team score of 192.450 last week in a loss against UIC. Junior Jenna Bossle placed first on the vault, posting a score of 9.825. Also placing on the vault was junior Elise Gray, who posted the score of 9.775. Bossle also placed first on the uneven bars with a 9.825.
The Redbirds are hoping to continue to better their scores this week, despite a season-ending injury.
"The team is healthy this week except for the loss of Riley Childress, due to injury. She hurt herself at the first meet and it was difficult for the entire team. Her leadership, consistency and strong routines will be greatly missed this season".
The meet will be held in UIC's Physical Education Building, starting at 5 p.m.
