Normal, Ill. - Taking their routines on the road, the Illinois State gymnastics team (1-0) will travel to Muncie, Ind. on Friday to compete against Ball State (0-1) in its first road meet of the season. The competition is set to begin at 6 p.m. The Cardinals competed at Western Michigan on Sunday in their season opener, losing 185.450-189.825.

The Redbirds hope to carry their momentum from Sunday's win to Friday's meet at Ball State.

"I think the momentum will carry over to Friday, said head coach Bob Conkling. "The team knows where they need to make improvements. We need to make a few adjustments on how to prepare for each event, but the girls know what they need to do and have stepped up."

The first away meet can be intimidating, but the athletes have been working out their routines in practice and are eager about the trip.

"The athletes are excited about the trip and the meet," said Conkling. "Ball State is not very far away. So it is not a tough trip for us to take. We also have a great following from our parents and hope to see many of them there. However, Ball State has a new coach this season, and they have many talented athletes on their team with a lot of routines to choose from. So we can't lose focus."

The Redbirds go into the meet ranked at the top of each individual event in the Midwest Independent Conference.. They are also ranked No. 1 on the uneven bars, floor routine and in the team total. Meaghan Koshman holds the honor of MIC gymnast of the week, which she was awarded on Wednesday.

Last season the `Birds defeated the Cardinals, 190.70-189.075, in a triple meet at Eastern Michigan.
