King Named MIC Gymnast of the Week
Jan. 16, 2013
SHREVEPORT, La. - Illinois State sophomore Sami King was strong in the all-round completion for the Redbirds in their two meets last weekend and for her efforts, she was named the Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) Gymnast of the Week by the conference office Wednesday.
The weekly award is the second for King in her career at ISU. King was named the MIC Gymnast of the Week after week one last year, when she won the all-around competition in her first collegiate meet. Joining King as a weekly honoree was Bethany Larimer of Texas Woman's University, who was named the MIC Specialist of the Week for her performances on the balance beam last week.
The Redbirds opened the 2013 season Friday at home against Lindenwood and traveled upstate Sunday to face Northern Illinois. King was a standout for the Redbirds in both meets, as she finished just behind teammate Jenna Bossle for the all-around crown in the Redbirds season opener Friday with a score of 38.175. The Canton, Mich., native clinched the title on the beam with a score of 9.675 and nabbed second place on the vault with a score of 9.700 behind Bossle.
Two days later in DeKalb, Ill., King followed up the performance by winning the all-around competition at Northern Illinois with a career-high score of 39.050. King tied for first on the beam (9.825) and was second on bars (9.750) to wrap up a solid weekend of competition.
King and her teammates will return to action Sunday, Jan. 27, when they host MIC and in-state rival UIC. The meet is set to begin at 2 p.m. inside historic Horton Field House.
