Genereux and King Close Season at NCAA Regional
April 7, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - After placing 13th and 16th respectively in the all-around competition at the NCAA Champaign Regional, junior Kim Genereux and freshman Samantha King returned home to Illinois State Saturday, April 7. Genereux in 16th place earned a score of 38.625, and King in 13th place earned a score of 38.450.
Head coach Bob Conkling was happy with the performances from the gymnasts tonight.
"Honestly, they both did great," said Conkling. "There were a couple spots that both of them could have done better on, particularly on beam and floor. If they had, they'd be right up with the placing teams. It was good for them both to see the competition, especially with who they were rotating with."
It was a first time appearance in the Regional competition by both Genereux and King. Both gymnasts' strength was the uneven parallel bars. Genereux scored a 9.775, while King scored 9.750. Genereux scored a 9.650 on vault, a 9.550 on balance beam, and a 9.650 on floor exercise. King scored a 9.475 on vault, a 9.650 on beam and a 9.575 on floor.
Conkling expects great performances from the gymnasts next season.
"I absolutely feel that the success in this season will foreshadow success in the upcoming season," said Conkling. "They are ready for a little mini break, and then they will be right back in the gym working hard for next season."
Oklahoma placed first in the team competition, with a score of 197.025, followed by Stanford in second place with a score of 196.675, and Illinois placing third with a score of 195.725.
Although Genereux and King were the only two gymnasts to qualify from Illinois State, Conkling was proud of the team as a whole this season, and has high hopes for the season to come.
"I am proud of both the gymnasts, but I am proud of the whole team," said Conkling. "It has been the best season since I have been here in all aspects of gymnastics. The whole team stepped up this year and worked on consistency and eliminating deductions. It was good that Kim and Sami qualified for Regionals this year, and the team was able to watch. Now, they know what it takes to make it as a team to Regionals and can work towards that goal."
The gymnastics team will be holding a private banquet on Saturday, April 14, and awards will be given on that day.
