Genereux and King Close Season at NCAA Regional
April 6, 2013
NORMAN, Okla. - Sophomore Sami King and senior Kim Genereux competed tonight at the 2013 NCAA Regional. King finished the meet sixth place with the score of 39.125 and Genereux finished the meet 13th place with the all-around score of 38.500.
Head coach Bob Conkling was happy with the performances from the gymnasts tonight.
"Kim started off on floor and it was a little rough, but she came back and performed well on the rest of the events. She rocked her beam routine and I couldn't be more pleased of how she ended her career. Sami rotated with Oklahoma and was right up there with their team. She had some tiny mistakes, but overall she did really well and placed sixth in the all-around. They both represented Illinois State very well and I am so proud of them."
It was King and Genereux's second appearance in the Regional competition. King was strong throughout the entire competition. She score above a 9.725 on each event and was a tenth and a half from qualifying to NCAA Nationals. King scored a 9.8 on the balance beam and a 9.85 on floor.
Genereux also had a strong meet. She finished her career with a stuck dismount on the uneven bars and scored a 9.75.
Oklahoma placed first in the team competition, with a score of 197.375, followed by Stanford in second place with a score of 196.800, and Washington placing third with a score of 195.925.
Although Genereux and King were the only two gymnasts to qualify from Illinois State, Conkling was proud of the team as a whole this season, and has high hopes for the season to come.
"I am proud of both the gymnasts, but I am also proud of the whole team," said Conkling. "It has been a great season in all aspects of gymnastics. The whole team has really stepped up this year when there were six injuries. Our goal next year is to qualify as a team to Regionals."
The gymnastics team will be holding a private banquet on Sunday, April 28, and awards will be given on that day.
