CHICAGO, Ill. - In a four-way meet against teams from the Land of Lincoln, the Illinois State gymnastics squad finished second Saturday in the annual State of Illinois Classic in Chicago hosted by UIC.

The Redbirds finished with a team score of 194.075, ahead of UIC and Northern Illinois in third and fourth places, respectively. Illinois took the team title with a score of 195.700, highlighted by a perfect 10.000 score on the vault by Alina Weinstein.

"I was very pleased with the team's performance today against some quality gymnasts," ISU head coach Bob Conkling said. "We only had one missed routine among the 24 today, so I was really happy with that. It wasn't perfect gymnastics, but they fought through it and that's all you can ask for from your team when things may not be going as well as planned."

ISU was led by sophomore Sami King, who finished third in the all-around competition with a score of 39.000. King was solid in every event, with no score lower than a 9.700, and posted scores of 9.775 on the floor exercise to finish fifth and on the vault to finish seventh.

"Sami has been a solid gymnast for us the second half of this season," Conkling said. "She's first-team all-state now and deserves that honor. It wasn't her best been all-around meet, but it was a good, solid performance by her. I thought all four of our all-arounders did really well today."

Junior Jenna Bossle also posted a top-five finish in the all-around competition with a score of 38.950 to finish fifth overall. Bossle recorded a pair of fifth-place finishes on bars (9.800) and on the vault (9.800) to round out her solid performance on the day. Senior Kim Genereux rounded out a strong day for ISU with a tie for fourth place on beam with a score of 9.750, which helped her to a sixth-place finish in the all-around competition with a score of 38.925.

Freshman Amanda Mohler tallied the highest individual finish of the day for a Redbird competitor, when she tied for second place on beam with a score of 9.775.

The Redbirds will have a week off, before travelling to Shreveport, La., to attempt to win their second-straight Midwest Independent Conference title, when they compete in the 2013 MIC Championship Meet on March 23.
