Illinois State falls to No. 13 Denver and Arizona State

Denver, Colo. - The Illinois State gymnastics team competed against No. 13 Denver and Arizona State Saturday night in Hamilton Gymnasium.

The University of Denver placed first as a team with a total score of 197.200. Arizona State University totaled a 195.675, placing second and Illinois State placed third with a 194.275.

"Overall, I think that we had a really good meet and we stayed focused throughout each event," said head coach Bob Conkling. "We started on bars and it wasn't our best, but we still did well. I was happy with how the team hit beam and floor routines."

Sophomore Sami King led the Redbirds tonight. She placed first on the balance beam with a personal best 9.900. She also placed second in the all-around with a career-high 39.325.

The Redbirds started on the uneven bars and posted high scores. Senior Kim Genereux had the highest bars score for the Redbirds with a 9.775. They followed on the balance beam also posting solid scores. All scores that were counted on the beam were above a 9.650.

Illinois State had a great floor exercise rotation. The gymnasts posted a team score of 48.950, with all scores counted being above a 9.750. King had the highest floor exercise score from the Redbirds with a 9.875.

"Vault wasn't our best, but we did a really nice job filling in for those who were injured. We will continue to work hard on vault as well as the other events to continue to improve for the upcoming MIC Conference Championships," said Conkling.

The Redbirds are back in action on March 16 when they compete in the Illinois Classic. The meet will be held in Chicago, Ill. starting at 5 p.m.
