CHICAGO, Ill. - The Illinois State gymnastics team competed at the 15th annual Chicago Style gymnastics meet Friday night against No. 13 Arizona, Pittsburgh and Texas Women's.

No. 13 Arizona came in first place with a score of 195.950. The University of Pittsburgh placed second as a team with a 194.750. Texas Women's and Illinois State earned third and fourth respectively, with scores of 192.825-191.125.

"Unfortunately, we just had too many mistakes tonight," said head coach Bob Conkling. "We started uneven bars with three falls and we are usually a solid team on bars, but we didn't get the job done tonight. The gymnasts just have some confidence issues to work on then we should be ready to go for the rest of the season."

The Redbirds were strong on vault and scored a team score of 48.675. Elise Gray scored a 9.850, followed by Sami King who scored a 9.800. The gymnasts were also strong on balance beam and improved since last meet. Sami King scored a 9.775. Senior Tori Sarantakis posted a 9.725 on the balance beam.

"We had some really good performances tonight. Sami King had a strong meet on all four events. Elise Gray also looked good on the vault. Also, this was the first meet senior Apollonia Barrientos competed on floor and she did really well," Conkling said.

The Redbirds are back in action on Feb. 15, where they will travel to Cape Giradeau, Mo. The meet is against SEMO and will start at 6:30 p.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
