The Illinois State gymnastics team took second place at the inaugural Illinois vs. Michigan meet Friday night inside Bowen Field House at Eastern Michigan. The state of Illinois posted a victory of the state of Michigan, 387.00-383.975.

UIC led the meet with a score of 194.125, followed by Illinois State with a score of 192.875. Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan earned third and fourth place respectively, with scores of 192.200-191.775.

The Redbirds performed strong on vault, scoring a season-high team score of 48.575. Head Coach Bob Conkling seeks improvement for next week's meet.

"We are definitely going to work on our vault," said Conkling. "We had our highest vault score, but we definitely are still going to work on it for the next meet. We will be working details and hitting solid routines. Everyone has to get up, and everyone has to hit. We can't just have a few girls do outstanding. Mentally and physically we need to better prepare to hit all of our routines. We had a mix of good and bad routines tonight."

Junior Tori Sarantakis was one of four that tied for third place on vault, with a score of 9.800. Junior Kim Genereux placed third on uneven bars with a score of 9.775, and senior Melissa Mann tied for third place on the balance beam with a score of 9.775.

"No one was extremely thrilled with how they performed tonight," said Conkling. "But we are thankful for no major injuries. It is always positive to leave a meet with no one getting seriously hurt."

The Redbirds are set to host Wisconsin-Stout, Seattle Pacific, and Temple Friday, Feb. 10, in historic Horton Field House, beginning at 7 p.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
