NORMAL, Ill.-- The Illinois State gymnastics team hosted their first home meet on Friday evening placing second among four teams. The Redbirds score of 191.100 beat both Centenary (186.250) and Illinois-Chicago (189.550) but was six-tenths of a point short behind Southeast Missouri State's 191.700.

Placing in the top three in each event, the Redbirds showed great improvement from last week's duel match against Central Michigan. The gymnasts added eleven points to their all-around score. Head coach Bob Conkling believes the gymnast's attitudes changed immensely and the girls stayed positive.

"Focusing on the task at hand was the biggest goal of the week. We made corrections were we needed them and kept our focus," Conkling said. "There is no comparison from last week's meet. The girls didn't let anything bother them tonight."

The Redbirds finished their balance beam set with a winning score of the night (48.250). Sophomore Meaghan Koshman captured second place on the balance beam (9.725) while also receiving first place on the vault (9.725). Senior co-captain Anne Fjordholm stuck a 9.800 on the balance beam to receive first place.

Two more top three spots were held by the `Birds on the uneven bars. Junior Amanda Candler placed first with a score of 9.800 while sophomore Mary Hankosky placed third and a career best score of 9.725. Senior Whitney Albright tied for fourth with a 9.700. On floor, senior Carolina Posada achieved a 9.725 tied performance for third place. Senior Tove Fjordholm was just below placing fourth with a 9.700.

Conkling is extremely pleased with how his gymnasts performed in the Midwest Independent Conference quad meet.

"The team did it tonight. Their confidence levels were high and they never doubted themselves," Conkling said. "The entire effort of the team was there tonight whether they were competing or not."

The `Birds will host their next home meet against Alaska on January 26 at 7:00 p.m. in Horton Fieldhouse.
